Dead Letters

[In Max's room, there is a pile of finished portraits set on the desk. It's all the ones he did of the living over the past weeks, plus a self-portrait. The letters are ducked into the self-portrait's frame - only one reason anyone would need that, after all.

There's also two larger canvases set against the wall: matching portraits of Bolton and Jamie, with their own note attached.]

I'm not good with stuff like this - that's why I always just put pictures instead of notes at the wall. Sorry I can't go to Portland with you, I guess. That was a really nice offer. I was really looking forward to it. And thanks for picking Rosa up for me if you ever get to do that.

At least let Manaka or somebody cook for you. Probably her or Thomas. The guy's not actually going to poison anyone, it's fine.

You should talk to him, actually, if you haven't. He's from a small town, too. I think you have a few things in common. (Not the murder part obviously, but tell him he's got boyfriend options other than Jack the Ripper out there)

Listen, you're ridiculously smart. I think you can really help everyone here. I can't ask you to take responsibility for them or anything, because that's not something anyone can really do, but I believe in you. Just make sure you take care of yourself too. I'll haunt you if you don't.

I know everyone here kinda thinks of you as a leader, but don't take on all that responsibility, okay? You're just a kid, you shouldn't have to take care of everybody around here. That's sort of what I was trying to do.

I never told you this, Manaka, because I felt like it was maybe too far. But I'm dead now, so it doesn't really matter.

Don't go home. If you all ever get out of here, go get your bodyguard guy and whoever else you want and just run. Whatever's going on back home with all this mage stuff, it isn't worth your life having to be like this. Even though this has all been a nightmare, it'd be nice if something good could still come out of it - you could go anywhere. Just go.

For weeks now I've been thinking about asking you if you wanted me to try and change that tattoo to something else. I dunno if it could be removed, but you can always just cover over things when you paint, so it's not all that different, right? Maybe you can even incorporate some of the shape into something new and better.

I don't know why I'm telling you this now. Maybe that's shitty of me? Talk to J if you actually do want that, he actually knows about tattoos.

Man, I had this whole letter about the robot thing and how I thought you could trust people here and blah blah blah now I have to write a new one. I sort of hate writing these? It's depressing and I don't really know what I'm supposed to say. How could you decide what to tell somebody after you've died?

I'm not saying you can't ever attack her, because someone definitely needs to attack her. Just don't go and do it without telling anybody. It's dangerous for you too, and just because you're more durable in some ways doesn't mean you need to risk yourself for us everyone else.

Hey guys,

Okay, I know this is kinda weird. I mean, you guys just started dating last week, and I'm painting big romantic portraits of you? Creepy. Also if you're reading this I'm probably not even alive to say anything about it, so this is basically the nightmare scenario.

Anyway, I guess if I had to say anything, it'd be that what you guys have going on seems like the one good thing that's happened around here in a really long time. I wanted to do something for it. That's all.
